Why Russian Words Sound Different (Part 1)
If you start learning Russian from textbooks…
real Russians can sound like a completely different language 😄
Because natives LOVE shortening words.
And honestly?
We do it CONSTANTLY 👀
In this lesson we practice REAL spoken Russian phrases Russians actually use every day.
🔥 “Здравствуйте” → “Здрасте”
Instead of:
🇷🇺 Здравствуйте
real Russians often say:
🇷🇺 Здрасте 😄
It’s shorter, faster, and MUCH more natural in conversation.
Examples:
🇷🇺 Здрасте!
👉 Hello!
🇷🇺 Здрасте, проходите.
👉 Hello, come in.
But then Russians made it EVEN weirder 👀
😏 “Здрасте, приехали”
This phrase does NOT literally mean:
❌ “Hello, we arrived.”
REAL meaning:
👉 “Seriously?”
👉 “Oh great…”
👉 “Here we go again…”
Example:
🇷🇺 Ты опять забыл ключи? Здрасте, приехали 😄
👉 You forgot the keys again? Seriously?
Very Russian 😄
🔥 “Сейчас” → “Щас” → “Ща”
This is one of the MOST common spoken Russian reductions.
Instead of:
🇷🇺 Сейчас
👉 now
Russians say:
🇷🇺 Щас
🇷🇺 Ща
Examples:
🇷🇺 Я щас вернусь.
👉 I’ll be back in a second.
🇷🇺 Ща-ща-ща 😄
👉 Okay okay, wait 😄
Sometimes it’s sarcastic too 👀
🇷🇺 Ага, щас 😏
👉 Yeah right.
🔥 “Сегодня” → “Седня”
Instead of:
🇷🇺 Сегодня
👉 today
many natives say:
🇷🇺 Седня
Example:
🇷🇺 Я седня не работаю.
👉 I’m not working today.
🔥 “Сколько” → “Скока”
Another VERY common real Russian pronunciation.
🇷🇺 Скока время?
👉 What time is it?
🇷🇺 Скока это стоит?
👉 How much does it cost?
This is REAL spoken Russian 👀
Not textbook Russian 😄
🔥 Why This Matters
If you only learn:
❌ perfect textbook pronunciation
you may understand teachers…
BUT NOT natives 😅
That’s why listening to REAL spoken Russian is SO important.
