Why Russians Don’t Always Speak “Textbook Russian” 👀
If you learn Russian from textbooks…
you may understand grammar perfectly…
…but then hear real Russians speaking like THIS:
👉 «Слышь»
👉 «Хошь?»
👉 «Тока»
👉 «Ваще»
…and suddenly your brain stops working 😭
The good news?
This is completely normal.
Native speakers shorten words ALL the time in casual speech.
It happens in English too:
- “going to” → “gonna”
- “want to” → “wanna”
- “give me” → “gimme”
Russian does exactly the same thing.
And if you want to understand real Russian people, movies, YouTube videos, friends, coworkers, or conversations in the street — you NEED these forms.
🇷🇺 Real Spoken Russian Examples
👀 Видишь → Вишь
👉 “you see”
Example:
🇷🇺 Вишь, как красиво?
👉 You see how beautiful it is?
👂 Слышишь → Слышь
👉 “you hear”
Example:
🇷🇺 Слышь, как тихо?
👉 Can you hear how quiet it is?
⚠️ BUT BE CAREFUL:
When used alone, «Слышь!» can sound rude.
🇷🇺 Слышь, ты кто такой?
👉 Hey, who are you?!
🍔 Хочешь → Хошь
👉 “you want”
Example:
🇷🇺 Хошь есть?
👉 Wanna eat?
☕ Будешь → Бушь
👉 “you will / would you like”
Example:
🇷🇺 Бушь чай?
👉 Want some tea?
🤫 Можешь → Мошь
👉 “you can”
Example:
🇷🇺 Мошь потише?
👉 Can you be quieter?
🗣️ Говоришь → Гришь
👉 “you say”

Russians also say:
- грю
- грит
- грят
Example:

👉 at all / actually
Examples:

👉 I don’t know him at all

👉 I don’t understand anything at all
👀 Только → Тока
👉 only / just
Examples:
🇷🇺 Тока не разбей 😭
👉 Just don’t break it
🇷🇺 Она тока ушла
👉 She just left
🚫 Нельзя → Нези / Нельзя → Низя
👉 not allowed
Example:
🇷🇺 Тут незя курить
👉 You can’t smoke here
✅ Правильно → Прально
👉 correctly
Example:

This phrase expresses surprise.
It can be:
- positive 😄
- negative 😭
Examples:
🇷🇺 Ты ваще молодец
👉 You’re amazing
🇷🇺 Ты ваще дурак 😭
👉 You’re such an idiot

👗 Как тебе?
👉 “What do you think?”
Examples:
🇷🇺 Как тебе эта песня?
👉 Do you like this song?
🇷🇺 Как те это платье?
👉 Do you like this dress?

Please don’t be afraid of these words.
This IS real Russian.
This is how native speakers actually talk every single day.
If you only study textbook Russian, real conversations may sound completely different.
