One of the biggest mistakes Russian learners make…
They learn correct Russian.
But not real Russian.
For example, many textbooks teach phrases like:
📖 Здравствуйте. Как ваши дела?
📖 Я приобрела новый телефон.
📖 Может быть, выпьем пива?
Are these phrases wrong?
No.
They are perfectly correct Russian.
The problem is that native speakers often sound very different in everyday life.
Imagine someone asks you:
“How are you?”
Most English speakers don’t answer:
“I am experiencing a satisfactory state of well-being.”
You simply say:
“I’m good.”
Russian works the same way.
In real conversations you are much more likely to hear:
🇷🇺 Ты как?
🇷🇺 Да нормально.
Instead of:
🇷🇺 Как ваши дела?
The same thing happens with many everyday situations.
📖 У меня много работы.
🗣️ Да завал на работе.
📖 Я приобрела новый телефон.
🗣️ Да вот, новый айфон взяла.
📖 До свидания.
🗣️ Ну всё, давай.
The good news?
You don’t need to memorize thousands of slang words.
You just need to start noticing how native speakers simplify and shorten their speech.
That’s often the difference between:
❌ Understanding your textbook
and
✅ Understanding real people.

What was the first Russian phrase you learned that sounded completely different when you heard native speakers use it?
