Real Russian Speech: Why Russians Say «Чё», «Щас» and «Ничё» 🇷🇺
If you’ve been learning Russian from textbooks, you might feel confused when you hear real Russians speak 😄
Because in real life, native speakers shorten words ALL the time.
For example:
- что → чё
- сейчас → щас
- ничего → ничё
- сегодня → седня
- тебе → те
- тебя → тя
And yes — Russians really talk like this every day.
In this lesson, we explore some of the most common spoken Russian сокращения (shortened forms) that you’ll hear in conversations, YouTube videos, cafés, taxis, and chats with friends.
🇷🇺 One Word Can Change Everything
The word:
🇷🇺 «Что»
often becomes:
🇷🇺 «Чё»
Examples:
- Чё случилось?
👉 What happened? - Чё ты хочешь?
👉 What do you want?
Sometimes it can even mean “why”:
- Чё ты пришёл?
👉 Why did you come?
This is why listening practice with REAL Russian is so important.
If you only learn textbook Russian, native speech can sound completely different.
🇷🇺 Russians Love Shortening Words
Here are some very common examples:
| Real Russian | Full Word | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| комп | компьютер | computer |
| ноут | ноутбук | laptop |
| инет | интернет | internet |
| телик | телевизор | TV |
| фотка | фотография | photo |
| велик | велосипед | bicycle |
Examples:
- Я щас продаю свой ноут
👉 I’m selling my laptop right now - Скока ты платишь за инет?
👉 How much do you pay for the internet? - Я не смотрю телик
👉 I don’t watch TV
🇷🇺 A Funny Thing About Russian Negatives
In English, double negatives are usually incorrect.
But in Russian?
✅ Totally normal.
Example:
🇷🇺 Я ничё не хочу
👉 Literally: “I don’t want nothing”
👉 Real meaning: “I don’t want anything”
This is one of the things that surprises many Russian learners 😄
🇷🇺 Spoken Russian = More Emotional
Expressions like:
- Ну чё ты?
- И чё?
- Ничё…
carry emotion, attitude, and personality.
Sometimes they sound caring.
Sometimes sarcastic.
Sometimes indifferent.
That’s why understanding REAL Russian is not only about vocabulary — it’s also about feeling the tone.
